Steelhead movement up the St. Joseph River remains slow, but Trail Creek in Michigan City is a different matter.

Indiana fish managers have captured 76 fresh fish at the Trail Creek weir and have passed several other trout and salmon there the past couple of days.

The adult fish are being taken to Bodine Fish Hatchery in Mishawaka where they will be matured and used to produce eggs and future stockings. The Trail Creek location had to be used in light of minimal fish movements in the St. Joe, due to low water conditions.

Some fish are being caught in the lower St. Joe at Berrien Springs, but the run still lags behind. However, officials remain optimistic that cooler weather and rains will attract the Skamania over the coming weeks. In the meantime, stream anglers will have to fish Trail Creek and the other cooler water streams in southwest Michigan.

Trail Creek was in the low 60s while the upper St. Joe remained in the 70s.

Also, the last report we got Thursday was that Lake Michigan action has been spotty. Some perch are being caught but it’s basically been hit or miss.

Michigan biologist Jay Wesley said the perch have been lounging in deeper water this year.

“The traditional areas in close haven’t been producing as consistently, but the guys fishing 50 to 70 feet have been doing better,” he noted.
