Indiana to Recognize Creek Chub Bait Company

Garrett, Ind, will celebrate the founding of Creek Chub Bait Company with the placement of an Indiana Historic Marker August 12.

The ceremonies will be conducted on the site where the factory once stood. Creek Chub celebrated its 100th anniversary last year.

The state marker ceremony will begin at 8:30 am, half a block east of city hall which is located at 130 S. Randolph Street. Todd Fiandt, Mayor of Garrett, Casey Pfeiffer from the Indiana State Historic Bureau and author Dr. Harold Smith will be honorary speakers for the program.

The Garrett Historical Museum, located in the city park, will be open free to the public after the Creek Chub festivities. Fishing tackle appraisers will be on hand so visitors are encouraged to bring old fishing tackle to discover what treasures they may own. Dr. Smith will be signing his new book The Field Guide to Creek Chub Lures and Collectibles. Dr. Smith has authored six books on Creek Chub.

Creek Chub Bait Company was founded in 1916 by Henry Dills, an employee of the B&O Railroad. The original lures were hand designed and built, one at a time. Dills would test his creations first in the family bathtub, then while bass fishing on nearby Lake Indian. The Creek Chub Wiggler was the company’s first lure, followed by the Pikie, the latter of which is still a popular bait today.

Currently Creek Chub offers seven iconic lures.
