Look for Leg Bands Or ‘Trackers’ on Indiana GeeseLook for Leg Bands Or ‘Trackers’ on Indiana GeeseResearchers from the Division of Fish & Wildlife, Ball State University, and Franklin College are using tracking devices to study the behavior of Canada geese in Indiana. If you harvest a goose with one of these devices on its leg, in addition to reporting the metal leg band to the Bird Banding Laboratory, please call 765-285-8842 to report the tracker.

Tracking device locations allows researchers to accurately record the data, helping to sustain future goose hunting opportunities. You will receive an exact replica of the device to keep after the data are downloaded.

Michigan Duck Stamps/Prints Available NowMichigan Duck Stamps/Prints Available Now

The 2020 collector-edition Michigan duck stamps and prints are now available for purchase.

The Michigan Duck Hunters Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to waterfowl and wetland conservation, coordinates the Michigan waterfowl stamp program in partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Proceeds from stamp sales will be used to fund MDHA projects, with 10% used to match DNR funding for purchasing, restoring and enhancing wetlands.

The Michigan Duck Stamp Program was established in 1976 and has become an icon for waterfowl hunters and wetland conservation enthusiasts. During the past 44 years, the program has gained popularity with collectors and conservation groups throughout the United States.

The 2020 Michigan duck stamp, painted by Christopher Smith, features a flock of Canada geese coming into a decoy spread. Smith, a wildlife artist from Suttons Bay, Michigan, also took first place in the 2018, 2016, 2014 and 2005 Michigan State Duck Stamp contests and second place in the 2013 contest, and placed first in 2009 and 2014 for the Michigan Ducks Unlimited Sponsor Artist of the Year. He tied for seventh in the 2016 Federal Duck Stamp Contest. He also painted the 2013 Print of the Year for the Ruffed Grouse Society.

Purchasing the stamps is voluntary and does not replace the state waterfowl hunting license.

MDHA will also mail individuals who purchase a 2020 waterfowl hunting license a free copy of the stamp (subject to availability) if they send a self-addressed, stamped envelope with a copy of their Michigan waterfowl hunting license to: MDHA Waterfowl Stamp Program, P.O. Box 186, Kawkawlin, MI 48631.

Michigan waterfowl hunters are asked to weigh in on preferences for potential changes to the current waterfowl hunting zones by filling out an online survey.

The online survey will be available until Nov. 8. It is available to anyone that bought a Michigan waterfowl hunting license within the last five years. You may take the survey only once.

Every five years, states may make changes to their duck hunting zones; however, any changes must be maintained for the next five years.

Michigan waterfowl reserved hunt applications are available now through Wednesday, Aug. 28. Applications are $5, and hunters may only apply once.

Reserved hunts will be held both mornings and afternoons of the opening weekend (Oct. 12 and 13) of waterfowl hunting season at Fish Point State Wildlife Area, the Harsens Island Unit of the St. Clair Flats State Wildlife Area and Shiawassee River State Game Area.

Drawing results will be posted Sept. 16.
