IDNR Report

Indiana, along with many other states, was affected by an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza earlier this year.

Avian influenza declined through the summer months; however, some states have had a recent increase in wild bird deaths associated with the disease. DNR advises hunters to be aware of a potential resurgence of avian influenza as the waterfowl hunting seasons progress.

Indiana DNR partnered with the United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services to test hunter-harvested waterfowl for highly pathogenic avian influenza during early teal season at multiple DNR Fish & Wildlife areas, including Goose Pond, LaSalle, and Jasper-Pulaski.

Symptoms of avian influenza can differ depending on the individual animal, and some animals that have the virus do not display any symptoms.

MDNR Report

The Michigan DNR is developing a recreation and habitat management plan for its seven managed waterfowl hunt areas across southern Michigan: Fennville Farm Unit of Allegan State Game Area, Fish Point State Wildlife Area, Harsens Island Unit of St. Clair Flats State Wildlife Area, Muskegon County Wastewater, Nayanquing Point State Wildlife Area, Pointe Mouillee State Game Area and Shiawassee River State Game Area.

While these areas are managed primarily for waterfowl habitat and waterfowl hunting, they also provide outstanding opportunities for other outdoor recreation such as wildlife watching, fishing, hiking, paddling, non-waterfowl hunting and trapping.

Jr. Duck StampJr. Duck Stamp

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is accepting entries to the 2022 Michigan Junior Duck Stamp Contest – a decades-long tradition in Michigan currently administered by the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge in Saginaw.

The contest aims to raise education and awareness of North America’s waterfowl and wetland resources. Ally Wang, age 16 of Canton, won last year’s contest with her take on a northern pintail created with acrylic paint.
Students may submit artwork featuring whistling ducks, swans, geese, brant, dabbling ducks, diving ducks, sea ducks, mergansers, stiff tails or Hawaiian ducks, though everyone is encouraged to review the full list of permitted species.

A panel of three to five judges (virtually or in person) will evaluate entries on the basis of original design, anatomical accuracy, artistic composition and suitability for reproduction on a 1-inch by 1.5-inch stamp.
