p>Jimmy Brown and Larry Reyes caught 9.84 pounds to win the Michiana Fishing League tournament on Lake Maxinkuckee.

The battle on Lake Maxinkuckee was a rough one for a lot with the 15 mph + winds. The bite wasn’t as active as it normally is and some anglers found success.

Ben Harrison and Nicci Heneke (Portage, MI.) caught a quality limit of smallmouth in the CastingCouples tourney on Paw Paw Lake, giving them an easy win.

The couple had the only limit of smallmouth in the tournament and it weighed 15.82 pounds to earn them $215. They said they caught a 3-pound smallmouth on their fourth cast and began targeting them all day. It was their first time on the lake.

Whitetail DeerThere are some interesting hunting and fishing regulation proposals coming to Hoosier sportsmen over the next few months.

Perhaps the most interesting and pertinent proposal is a change in next year’s archery season. The DNR is offering an earlier start for bow hunters only, excluding crossbow shooters.

It’s all speculative now, as the DNR will take this proposal and others through the public comment period to receive input.

Barry Ukele with the Michiana Walleye Association shows off a nice walleye he caught from the St. Joe recently. The club helps the DNR stock walleyes in the river, and, according to recent surveys, last year’s young fish survived quite well.There’s good news for St. Joseph River walleye fishermen.

Fall surveys conducted by the Indiana DNR last month revealed better-than-average success of fish stocked by the DNR and the Michiana Walleye Association in 2011.

Biologist Neil Ledet spent October evenings cruising shallow river areas between Elkhart and Twin Branch dams with electro-shock equipment looking for one-year-old fish. The fish were temporarily stunned, captured, counted, measured and released.
