While sitting at this year’s Niles Riverfest waiting for visitors to bring in antique fishing tackle this year, a local antique dealer stopped by.

Ric Ladonski and I have set up a historic display of antique fishing tackle at the Niles Riverfest the past 20 years for visitors to enjoy. Each year the dealer waits for Ric and me to set up so he can make his yearly visit. This year was no exception.

Over the years he has come in with some “off the wall” finds. This year’s find surprised even me. In his hand was a 1950’s flip open cigarette lighter with a leaping fish on the front, but it was the back of the lighter that would really catch my eye.

The annual Fort Wayne Antique Fishing Lure Show will be held Oct. 27.

The show will be at Don Hall’s Guest House, 1313 West Washington Center Rd. in Fort Wayne.

Hours are 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and there will a $5 entrance fee.

Michiana collector Doug Bucha said this is one of the best ways to learn about lure collecting, as “this is one of the best attended shows in the Midwest.”

The show is sponsored by the National Fishing Lure Collectors Club. More details are available at the website, http://www.nflcc.org.

“It’s a good way for new collectors to learn more about the hobby,” said Bucha.

Antique fishing lure collectors will meet Tuesday at the Heddon Museum in Dowagiac, as they do on the second Tuesday of every month.

The informal meetings start at 6:30 p.m. and are mostly a show-and-tell night, with some selling, trading and buying taking place.

The museum is open for public viewing, too. Anyone interested in antique fishing items is welcome to stop by, as no membership or fees are required.

Antique Fly LuresAntique Fly LuresAntique tackle experts Doug Bucha and Ric Ladonski came across a rare find at their antique tackle display during the Niles Riverfest earlier this month.

Pictured here are some of the antique fly lures purchased by collectors at the Niles Riverfest.

The items were discovered in the tackle box of a deceased world fly fishing traveler and taken to the Riverfest by the angler’s friend for Bucha and Ladonski to identify and appraise.
