The annual Lake of the Woods Ice Derby near Bremen, Ind. Saturday has been cancelled.
Derby officials said there was too much open water on the lake although some anglers were fishing around the edges this week. Officials felt conditions would be unsafe for the general public, especially if the big snow in the forecast were to add more issues.
However, there will still be the morning pancake and sausage, biscuit and gravy all-you-can-eat breakfast at the community center for $5 from 5 – 9:30 a.m. and drawings for prizes will be held. Proceeds go to the local boys and girls club.

The 46th annual Fish Lake Property Owners Association Ice Fishing Derby is slated for next Saturday.
Registration begins at 5 a.m. at the American Legion on the south side of Fish Lake, located along Ind. 4 between North Liberty and Walkerton, Ind.
Entry fee is $5 for anglers ages 13 and over and $2.50 for youths 6-12. Prizes will be awarded for the largest fish in nine species categories. Contest hours are from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be served.

10 Tips for Tip-Up Fishermen
Amidst the focus on jigging and mobility over recent years, some proven strategies have been lost in the icy shuffle. Like tip-up fishing, which has consistently produced fish and forced guys into head-to-head 50-yard dash sprints since day one.
One guy who's tops on tip-ups is Frabill pro Pat Kalmerton of Sheboygan, Wis. based Wolf Pack Adventures. The good-natured guide will be the first to tell you that tip-up fishing is a sure fire way to cover lots of water quickly and ice just about anything that swims.
But Kalmerton stresses that tip-up fishing - like any angling approach - requires attention to detail. Set-it-and-forget is not part of this badger's program.
"I've had the opportunity to learn tip-up secrets from seasoned anglers throughout the Midwest that would take years to figure out by trial and error," says Kalmerton.

Clear H2o near Edwardsburg will host a Winter Open House Dec. 8-10 at the store.
Pro staffers and industry professionals will be on hand to demonstrate the top ice fishing products for 2017-18 and one room will be devoted to ice shanties. The store is offering free assembly with each shanty purchased and special pricing will be offered on ice tackle and gear.
The program is open to the public. Hours are 7-9 p.m. Dec. 8; 6 to 6 on Dec. 9; and 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Dec. 10. Free chili and refreshments will be available.
Ice anglers also can register for the store’s Ice Fishing Derby that kicks off Dec. 17.
