IDNR Report

Reserved turkey hunt procedures will change on participating DNR fish & wildlife areas (FWAs) for selected turkey hunters completing their hunt registration this year, as a result of COVID-19.

The changes will allow turkey hunting to continue on FWAs while maintaining social distancing practices.†Selected turkey hunters will be mailed date-specific hunting permit cards for their hunt period as well as a parking permit.

FWA offices will be closed to the public; however, the selected turkey hunters will still need to sign in each day at a property self-serve check-in booth before hunting. Hunters must maintain a minimum distance of 6 feet between each other while signing in. Both youth-season and regular-season turkey hunters will use the same procedures.

You apply by visiting on.IN.gov/reservedhunt and clicking on the "Reserved Hunt Info" link.

The application period is Jan. 6 through Feb. 19. No late entries will be accepted. The online method is the only way to apply. Applicants must possess a valid hunting license for the species they wish to hunt.

The Indiana DNR would like your help locating and counting young turkeys.

Each summer, wildlife biologists and citizen scientists count the number of young wild turkeys (poults) with turkey hens in what are termed “brood surveys.”

These surveys provide the DNR with information about turkey poult survival and help staff determine how to best manage wild turkey.

This summer, our goal is to collect 3,000 brood observation reports from citizens across the state. The survey runs from July 1 to Aug. 31.

If you are interested in participating, please register at https://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/8641.htm.
