Plans to dredge a channel from the new public access in the backwaters of Hudson to the main lake have been put on hold.
Hudson Lake is located west of South Bend near New Carlisle, Ind. and east of LaPorte, Ind.
The initial plan called for a deeper channel through the lily pads to be cut this fall, but there was no contractor available to do it.
That means the project will have to wait until next season. Boaters can still use the access but are reminded to idle carefully to reach the deeper water.

The Winona Lake Preservation Association has received a grant from DNRís Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) program for a project on Winona Lake in Kosciusko County.
The project will include a temporary closure of the public access site and ramp on the northwest side of the lake for about four weeks starting on Sept. 11.
The project involves the removal of sediment that has accumulated over time at sites on Winona Lake. The sediment will be removed by hydraulic methods, and affected areas will be restored to historical depths.†Three areas will be dredged using State and association funds. Extreme caution should be exercised when boating on Winona Lake during the dredging.
During this project, a hydraulic dredge and pump line will be present.†Due to the location of the dewatering basin, pump lines will be located at or near the surface of the lake and may stretch completely across the lake.†The lines should be marked with buoys. Orange buoys mark the only location where lines can be safely crossed by watercraft.†A portion of funding for this project comes from annual LARE fees paid by registered motorboat owners and from the Winona Lake Preservation Association.

In response to complaints from Pulaski County residents including excessive littering and other criminal activity by large groups of people on the Tippecanoe River, Indiana Conservation Officers conducted a multi-officer patrol of the river on Saturday August 31.
While patrolling the river by kayak, Indiana Conservation Officers encountered a large group of individuals floating on tubes and consuming alcohol while under the age of 21. Due to the size of the group, Indiana Conservation Officers requested the assistance of the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department and Winamac Police Department.

The Potawatomi Wildlife Park Annual Fishing Derby near Tippecanoe, Ind. will be held Sept. 7 from 8 a.m. to noon.
Cost is $5 for youths ages 10 to 16, $7 for those 7 and older and free to youngsters age 9 and under.
Families and individuals can enjoy a morning of fishing on a pond that is usually reserved for organized youth group fishing. Hotdogs, chips and beverages are available for purchase. Proceeds from sales and registration help cover costs and the prizes.
Kayak fishing team members representing Jackson Kayak and Native Watercraft will be present. Fluid Fun of Bristol, the regional kayak and canoe dealer serving the area, will also be present. They will be working with the kids, and be available to talk about kayak fishing and kayaks in general.
Those not interested in fishing but have questions on kayak are encouraged to come and talk with the reps during the morning's event.

The Indiana DNR is offering two chances for you to learn to fly fish with two September workshops, both led by DNR fisheries biologists.
The first event will be at Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis on Sept. 7 from 9 a.m. to noon. The second event will be on Sept. 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Salomon Farm Park in Fort Wayne.
Learn to Fly Fish workshops are designed to teach beginners the skills needed to fly fish on their own. Participants will learn about fly-fishing tackle and fishing techniques. Attendees will then gain hands-on instruction and practice casting a fly rod. Finally, participants will use their newly acquired skills and knowledge to go fly fishing with provided equipment.
