The Indiana DNR will be sharing information about white-tailed deer with a hunting group that is organizing a pilot program aimed at gathering public input for consideration in future deer management decisions.

The group - Indiana White-tailed Deer Herd Management (IWDHM) - is putting together county deer advisory councils, or CDACs, in a handful of counties. The pilot program is modeled after one that operates in Wisconsin.

In addition to local hunters, CDACs are expected to include representation from agriculture, forestry, local government, tourism, transportation, non-consumptive users, and a disease monitoring organization.

The DNR will provide the CDACs with information the agency already collects on an annual basis, including harvest data, crop depredation damage, forest damage, and deer-vehicle collision statistics.

CDAC meetings will gather public input on deer population goals and antlerless quotas for that county and share it with the DNR.

Whether a gathering of old friends during opening weekend of deer season, an adventure on the Ohio River fishing for giant catfish, or an annual family vacation to one of Indiana’s exceptional state parks, outdoor traditions run deep for many individuals and families throughout the Hoosier State.

One of these very special traditions comes along each year, just in time to help lift outdoorsy folks up during the waning days of late winter’s cold, gray grasp; it’s the Ford 63rd Annual Indianapolis Boat, Sport and Travel Show. An outdoor tradition in its own right, the largest outdoor show in the country has been helping outdoor-lifestyle enthusiasts and adventurous families make the most of their outdoor recreational experiences for the past 63 years.

You can help animal species such as bald eagles, peregrine falcons, barn owls, box turtles, black bears and more by donating to the Indiana Nongame Wildlife Fund as you do your taxes.

The Indiana Nongame Wildlife Fund supports the DNR Division of Fish & Wildlifeís Wildlife Diversity program. Program staff manages more than 750 nongame and endangered wildlife species. Nongame means the species is not hunted, trapped or fished. No state tax dollars are used.

You can donate all or a portion of your state tax refund to the Indiana Nongame Wildlife Fund. If you file with paper forms, look for the eagle logo on Schedule 5/Schedule IN-Donate. If you file through online tax programs, you will be prompted to donate at the end of filing, and the eagle logo will not be present.

This program is also supported by a match of federal funds through the State Wildlife Grants Program. For each $5 donated, another $9 will be added, equaling $14 for wildlife. Donations fund research, habitat conservation and more.

Past Wildlife Diversity successes have restored bald eagles, river otters and peregrine falcons to the state. In recent years, projects have included implementing techniques to improve natural reproduction of hellbenders (Indianaís largest salamander).
