Winners Ron Fabiszak and Ron NelsonWinners Ron Fabiszak and Ron NelsonRon Fabiszak (South Bend) and Ron Nelson (Berrien Springs) bested the R&B Circuit field on Lake Tippecanoe last weekend by targeting bedding fish on the main lake.

The winners had 15.36 pounds by fishing beds lying between 4 and 7 feet deep. They tossed an array of plastics at them and spent over an hour on the second biggest fish of the tournament, a 5.35-pound largemouth, before getting her to bite. The win earned them $730 while the big fish won them an additional $92.

Mike Lytle of the Allen County Bassmasters won the Zone 3-4 Top 8 tournament on Lake Wawasee last weekend.

Lytle caught 20.09 pounds over the two days while Travis Edgar of the Ye Ole Tackle Box Team was second with 18.70 pounds and Thomas Friddle of the Northern Bass Anglers was third with 17.78 pounds. Edgar also won the Ranger Cup.

KINGSTON, ONTARIO - This city will again host the Kingston Ontario Open bass tournament July 25-27 on Lake Ontario.

Eighty top celebrity and professional anglers from Canada and the United States, along with 80 co-anglers, will gather to battle for three consecutive days in a unique Pro/Am format where pros and their non-boating partners combine their daily weight in pursuit of the nation’s most prestigious title in tournament fishing and to raise money for The Kingston Military Family Resource Centre (KMFRC).

The Canadian Open will team pro anglers with different co-anglers each day for the three-day competition on Lake Ontario. This unique format encourages the pros to share their hard-earned knowledge, with their co-anglers each day.

Tournament Director Andrew Pallotta said the tournament is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to compete in a tournament to learn from the best and maybe win thousands of dollars in prizes. The Pro provides the boat and the know-how; the co-angler just has to focus on fishing.

Ron Nelson of Berrien Springs took his Michigan skills to Virginia last month and won the EverStart Series Northern Division tournament on Smith Mountain Lake.

Nelson caught 48 pounds, 15 ounces over three days to win $32,555.

Nelson said 14 of his 15 bass came off beds.

Tournament anglers who fish for largemouth bass in northern Indiana natural lakes have had no long-term negative effects on bass populations, according to a study by DNR fisheries biologists.

Biologists examined the numbers and sizes of bass caught at 22 organized events in 2011 and 2012, and compared the results to 23 events in 2001 through 2003.

Over the 10-year period, average catch rates of bass tournament anglers increased from one bass per 6.7 hours of fishing to one bass per 4.3 hours. The average number of bass brought to tournament weigh-ins increased from 1.2 per angler to 1.7.
