A meeting hosted by the Elkhart St. Joseph River Association (SJRA) this Thursday, August 9, 2012, should be of interest to anglers who fish the upper river at the 6 Span public access.

The SJRA is appealing to river residents to pony up some additional cash to help treat aquatic vegetation that has been fueled by a mild winter, low water, and hot weather. Association members say the weeds are creating boating hazards.

Welcome to Michiana Outdoors News, an online source for outdoors from across northern Indiana and southern Michigan.

Our plan is to provide you timely outdoors information not found in traditional news outlets. You’ll get reports of regulation changes, fishing and hunting tips, inside scoop on trophy kills and catches taken from Michiana woods and waters, fishing and hunting conditions, our assessment of new gear pertinent to our region and more.

Some of you may recognize my name from more than 30 years of magazine and newspaper reporting. I continue to produce weekly outdoors columns for the South Bend Tribune and Goshen News as well as features for Bassmaster and B.A.S.S. Times magazines. This endeavor will serve as a timelier, detailed platform and extension of what you might find in weekly newspaper columns.

Of course, it’s going to be a work in progress and evolve as we develop new ideas. We will rely on Michiana sportsmen to share their photo, how-to tips or any other viable info that we believe you’d like to see and hear about.

If you have information or photos to share, send them to info@louiestout.com.

We want to provide a current schedule of events, to include bass tournaments, hunter education courses, seminars and other Michiana activities that readers email to us.

Think of Michiana Outdoors News as YOUR connection to what’s happening on both sides of the state line, from Lake Michigan to the Ohio/Indiana border.

It was only couple of years ago when Lake Webster gamefish had plenty of habitat.

Today, about the only “fish cover” in the lake are 11 manmade fish attractors purchased, built and installed by a group of concerned anglers and citizens with help from local businesses.

The fish attractors were necessary because all of the weeds are gone in the 774-acre Kosciusko County lake.

That’s what happens when residents get aggressive with weed killing chemicals to make the lake more boater-friendly.

Bass tournament fishing and NASCAR go together like beer and hot wings.

I get that, since both sports grew out of the south.

But NFL and bass fishing?

I didn’t see it coming, but that bond was definitely there during the first-ever KVD/Lions Charity Bass Tournament near Detroit last week.

It was born a year ago out of a conversation between Kalamazoo’s Kevin VanDam, arguably the best pro bass angler on the planet, and Lions’ head coach Jim Schwartz, who has turned the NFL doormat into a pillar of super bowl hope and promise.
