Zonas Win College Bass Tour Classic

Jakob and Hunter Zona caught 34.49 pounds in the College Bass Tour Classic during the two-day event on Long and Hubbard lakes.

They won a Bass Tracker Heritage Boat w/Mercury Outboard, 2 Yeti Rambler Trophies, 2 Quantum Smoke Reels, 2 Oakley Sunglasses, Mossy Oak Hats, Huk Clothing, and $750. They donated the cash back to CBT to be redistributed among participants.

The Zonas were in third place after the first day with 14.59 pounds they caught on Long Lake. They caught fish early by cranking Strike King KVD 1.5 crankbaits over rocky humps in 1 to 6 feet of water and later switched to 4-inch Strike King Ochos on 1/8-ounce Trokar jig heads for sight fishing visible smallmouth they saw on the rocks.

Although their second day weight was higher (19.90 pounds), they found conditions tougher on Hubbard. They only caught six keepers, but they were good ones, including a 6-pounder that proved to be the big bass for the tour.

They rotated between shallow and deep areas. They sight fished two smallmouth in shallow water and the other three were caught relating to deep weeds and wood in 25-30 feet of water.

They drop-shotted the deep water with the Strike King’s Z-Too.

Second place went to John Dorosh and Zack Smalldon with 32.50 pounds while Mason Vernia and Riley Klein were third with 32.23 pounds.

In addition, Kyle and Colin Jump finished fourth in the Classic and won the CBT’s “Team of Year” title.
