Each year, Indiana and Michigan set aside specific days during which you can fish in those states without needing a fishing license. Here are the details for 2026:
Indiana residents won’t need a license or a trout/salmon stamp May 10, June 6-7 and Sept. 26. This DOES NOT apply to non-residents, and all other state fishing regulations must be observed.
If you’re unsure where to go, the DN has an interactive map to help guide you to public access sites.
Michigan is more forgiving, allowing residents and non-residents to fish without a license June 13-14. In addition, a Recreation Passport will not be required to utilize boating access sites or state parks. But you also must follow all other state fishing regulations.
