Ron Nelson of Berrien Springs fished alone and caught five fish weighing 13.02 to win the Southwest Michigan Anglers Club (SMAC) event on Diamond Lake Sunday.

Diamond Lake is best known for tough fishing and small fish, but the event produced several limits and there were four fish brought to the scales weighing more than three pounds.

Nelson, who won $345 for first place, also had the biggest bass, a 3.32-pound largemouth, worth an additional $120. He said he fished worms and jigs in 5 to 7 feet of water, while the big fish came on a wacky worm.

Mickey and son Bo Thomas (Edwardsburg) were second ($230) with a limit weighing 11.11 pounds. They caught their fish in 7 to 10 feet on Lock Jaw Jigs while Tad Hepler (Niles) and Ron Fabiszak (South Bend) were third ($150) with 11.01 pounds. They caught their fish in 4 to 7 feet on crankbaits and jigs.

Terry Smith (South Bend) and Scott Crocker (Niles) were fourth ($75) with 10.81 pounds caught on tubes and darters.

The next event is July 12 on Klinger Lake. See Michiana Outdoors News Calendar for details.
