John Leader and Brian Souza caught 14.37 pounds to win the first annual Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament on the St. Joseph River held at the 6 Span access in late October.

The winners said they caught their four fish that included largemouth and smallmouth within 15 minutes after the tournament started. They were fishing a shallow flat along a break and caught everything on Rat-L Traps and 1/4-ounce Lockjaw jigs. Oddly enough, they couldnít catch a fish under 12 inches to fulfill a legal limit. (St. Joseph River regulations limit each angler to two fish over 15 inches and the rest must be under 12.)

Don Miles and Ron Fabiszak were second with 14.12 pounds caught early in the day on dark colored jigs in 2 to 6 feet of water.

Tom Bell and Teddy Bradley were third with 12.59 pounds. The team said they caught several smallmouth over 15 inches on jerkbaits, Rat-L Traps and Silver Buddies in 4 to 16 feet of water.

Dan and Marshall Dixon won big bass honors with a 5.26-pound largemouth caught on a jig in less than 6 feet of water.

The event attracted 29 boats and raised $265 to be donated to help fight breast cancer. Nearly $1,000 in prizes were also awarded thanks to
Donations from several participating sponsors.

Tournament organizer Frank Adams of Lockjaw Jigs said plans already are underway to increase the donation and tournament field for next year's event.
