Kris Thornton (Osceola) and John Fuchs (Mishawaka) weighed a 4.24-pound, five-fish limit that included 4 "under 12 inches" and 1 over ì15 inchesî to win the R&B Circuit open on the St. Joseph River at Maggies Landing.
Fishing conditions were extremely tough due to muddy water. Not one smallmouth bass was weighed in. The new DNR bass regulation on rivers imposes a 12- to 15-inch slot limit, meaning each angler can have in his possession fish under 12 and one over 15 inches.
Winners Horvath and Sterling with their catchJason Horvath (South Bend) and Brad Sterling (Bremen) weighed an 11.08-pound limit of smallmouth bass to win the R&B Circuit Open on the St. Joseph River at 6 Span last weekend.
Fishing was tough in the 38 degree water as only 29 fish were weighed in among the 19 teams participating. The tournament was originally scheduled for Lake Wawasee but had to be moved to the river because of frozen lakes.
The winners fooled all of their fish on Silver Buddy blade baits fished between 6-8 feet of water. They won $344.
Steve Szymczak (Osceola) and Jordan Felton (Osceola) brought a 9.76 pound limit of smallmouth to finish second ($244). They boated 30 fish over the 15-inch slot limit by slinging both Milk Run Lures Chicken Lips and Red Eye Shad around wood in 3 to 8 feet of water.
3rd Place: Despite a dead cranking battery, Andy Jenkins (Elkhart) and Scott Beard (Elkhart) managed 4 smallmouth weighing 8.93 pounds for third place ($140). They tricked their fish with both green pumpkin grubs and tubes.

And How: Randy Howells Charmed Last Day Leads To Bassmaster Classic Victory - Photo by Gary Tramontina/BassmasterBIRMINGHAM, Ala. Every angler dreams of catching bass after giant bass like Randy Howell did on Sunday.
Howell began hauling in Lake Guntersville lunkers minutes into the final round of the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by Diet Mountain Dew and GoPro. He lost track of how many culls he was able to make, but at one point he was trading 4- and 5-pounders for even larger bass.
When Howell brought his bag to the scales, his five bass weighed 29 pounds, 2 ounces, with the largest going 7-3. The banner day beefed up his total to 67 pounds, 8 ounces.
I dont even know if Im going to win, but it doesnt matter, Howell said before all the 25 finalists came to the scales. It was the best day Ive ever had in 21 years of professional bass fishing, a day of a lifetime.
