Kayak League Report
Cody Breseman of Union - 1st Place
Cody Breseman of Union took the SW Kayak League finale on Gravel Lake near Marcellus with five largemouth totaling 67.75 inches Sunday afternoon.
Those were just his largest, as he said he caught more than 30 from the tip of an underwater point, all on a white Megabass Vision 110 Junior jerkbait.
“I got everything off the submerged point in front of the channel right by the ramp,” said Breseman of his first victory after fishing all 10 of the afternoon contests. “The wind was blowing right into it and everything was up on top of it.”
Fishing his paddle-powered Wilderness Systems A.T.A.K. 120 kayak in the wind proved challenging, he said. Even with a heavy chain anchor, the relentless wind kept blowing him towards the fish-covered structure.
“I would have to shoot out back to deep water then come back shallow,” he said “Everything I got was in 5 feet or less.” Breseman’s win was worth $170 and also moved him from fifth into third for the league’s Angler of the Year, worth an additional $75. He was understandably jubilant.
“No motor, no fish finder, no pedal drive, I did it!” he exclaimed. “I can’t wait till next season!”

BASS Report
BASS College Series
College anglers looking to challenge themselves on the same fisheries as the pros can start making their plans now as officials unveiled the four regular-season stops and Wild Card tournament location for the 2023 Strike King Bassmaster College Series presented by Bass Pro Shops.
“We’re excited about how this schedule sets up to test college anglers on the same waters where the Elites and Opens pros are proving themselves,” said Glenn Cale, tournament manager for the Bassmaster College Series. “Whether they’re catching a record-breaking bag, grinding out a limit or learning the rhythms of a tidal river, anglers are going to experience a really diverse group of fisheries. The anglers who ultimately win the Team of the Year title will have really earned it ... but we’ll be having a lot of fun too.”
For the second year, the Bassmaster College Series will open at the Harris Chain of Lakes in Leesburg, Fla., Jan. 26-27. As most early-season Florida events are, the tournament should be dominated by hefty prespawn and spawning largemouth.
From there, the series will feature four events in four states from March through June. The schedule will continue with an event on Cherokee Lake in Jefferson County, Tenn., March 31-April 1, followed by tournaments on the James River in Richmond, Va., April 20-21, and the Red River in Natchitoches, La., May 4-5. Those teams who register but remain on the waitlist for the four regular-season events will enjoy an opportunity to qualify for the College National Championship via the Wild Card tournament on Alabama’s Lay Lake June 9-10.
Andrew Vereen and Connor Cartmell of Coastal Carolina University leveraged an eighth-place finish at the Wild Card event to qualify for the Bassmaster College Series National Championship on Winyah Bay, which the duo won in front of a raucous home crowd.
Tackle Shack Report
Mark Hamman and Nate Collins - 1st Place
Mark Hamman and Nate Collins wasted no time putting the winning fish in the boat during the Tackle Shack Fall Brawl last weekend on the St. Joseph River at 6 Span Bridge.
“We had our first fish on the third cast while boats were still flying by,” said Hamman. “We had a limit in the first half hour.”
That quick start led them to 11.39 pounds and the $2,400 first place check.
They caught their fish on A-rigs and culled a couple of times. When the A-rig bite died, they caught their biggest fish on a jerkbait. They headed to the dam area, culled once more, but said they never caught a fish on anything other than the A-rig and jerkbait.
Jason Fowler and Ron Fabiszak - 2nd Place
Jason Fowler and Ron Fabiszak were second ($1,400) with 9.62 pounds. As one of the last boats out at take-off, they started on an up-river spot and caught three small keepers on Ned rigs. They left there and moved down towards the dam where most of the field was fishing and caught four on a Ned rig and swimbait. They said they caught a total of 15 keepers.
SW Kayak League Report
Dave Mull - 1st Place
Pre-fishing didn’t go particularly well for Kalamazoo’s Dave Mull, preparing for Sunday afternoon’s Topwater SW Kayak League tournament on Fish Lake. From noon to 5 p.m. he only caught four small largemouths, each on a different lure.
Sunday October 30, he managed nine bites in four hours, all on a Z-Man Finesse ShadZ on a 1/10-ounce Tungsten Ned Head from Motley Fishing. The three “right” bites all came from a sharp turn in the breakline, where the depth plunged from 6 to 17 feet of water.
