TULSA, Okla. The bass on Grand Lake O the Cherokees are in transition, and all of the 55 anglers in the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro are doing a decent job staying ahead of them.
But on Friday, one angler a local favorite who lives right down the road did it better than anyone else.
Jason Christie, a Park Hill, Okla., pro who lives just an hour away from the lake, brought five bass to the scales that weighed 20 pounds, 14 ounces and took the opening-round lead in the Super Bowl of professional bass fishing. Alabamian Greg Vinson, who almost missed the event due to the lingering effects of a concussion, is second with 18-1, and Texas pro Alton Jones is third with 17-13.
The 12th annual Beef 'O' Brady's Bassmasters Classic Viewing Party will be March 6 at the Granger restaurant.
As he has done each year, Michiana angler and tournament director Rick Kedik has arranged to have the live internet broadcast of the Classic's final weigh-in streamed on two, 50-inch screens in the restaurant's party room. The live coverage will not be available on national television.
The event is expected to run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

St. Joe Valley Bass Masters - IBF Club of the Year
For the second year in a row, the Indiana Bass Federation has named South Bends St. Joe Valley Bass Masters the IBF Club of the Year as well as the Community Service award winner.
IBF president Kelly Hook said he thought the 40th annual youth tournament held at Potato Creek State Park that had around 200 kids participating, their participation in the Crime Night Out conducted by the St Joseph County Sheriff Department, and their charity tournament held at Diamond Lake were things the judging committee considered.

The club donated $1000 to the IBF Youth Tournament Trail that helped reduce the cost to the participants, ages 11 to 17. The Michigan DNR reminds those planning or organizing a bass fishing tournament in 2016 that all tournaments must be registered with the DNR.
In October 2015 the DNR's Natural Resources Commission issued Fisheries Order 215.15A (www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/FO-215_502574_7.pdf)requiring all bass fishing tournaments held in 2016 and thereafter to be registered online using the Michigan Fishing Tournament Information System. This requirement is for bass tournaments only and those that occur at both DNR and non-DNR-owned boat launches.
