With spring turkey season right around the corner, the Michigan DNR reminds hunters who havenít purchased a license yet that spring turkey licenses are still available.
The private land only season in Unit ZZ, which covers southern Michigan, runs April 20-May 3 and several licenses remain available.
"Michigan has been ranked in the top 10 in the nation for turkey harvest on an annual basis by the National Wild Turkey Federation," said Al Stewart, DNR upland game bird specialist. "The DNR's goal for the spring turkey season is to maximize hunting opportunities and maintain satisfactory hunting experiences. Over the years, Michigan has consistently exceeded turkey hunter satisfaction goals."

2015 Turkey Cooperator Patch The Michigan DNR encourages hunters to think spring and get in the turkey hunting spirit by purchasing a wild turkey cooperator patch.
The 2015 turkey patch, designed by Phoebe Talaga of Lake Orion High School, is now available for purchase. The Michigan Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, in partnership with the DNR, coordinates the wild turkey patch program. Proceeds from patch sales are used to fund wild turkey-related projects and management in Michigan.
Young hunters, 17 years old and younger, who have a valid wild turkey hunting license, may receive a free patch. To receive a patch, please send name and complete address, along with a legible copy of the youthís valid wild turkey hunting license, to National Wild Turkey Federation, Wild Turkey Patch Program, P.O. Box 8, Orleans, MI 48865. Please allow four to six weeks for delivery. If you have questions, please e-mail michiganwildturkeypatch@yahoo.com.
Adult hunters, collectors and other interested individuals may purchase the patch for $5, including postage and handling. Only the current-year patch is available for purchase. You do not have to harvest a turkey to purchase a patch. Send orders to the address above and please make check or money order payable to the National Wild Turkey Federation.

The Michigan DNR announced that spring turkey hunting applications are now on sale through Saturday, Feb 1. The 2015 spring turkey season runs April 20 through May 31, with several different hunt periods to choose from.
"Hunters looking for the greatest flexibility may wish to purchase a Hunt 234 license. You can buy this license starting March 16, no application required, and it's valid from May 4-31. It's valid for all open areas of the state except the public lands of southern Michigan," said DNR upland game bird specialist Al Stewart. "Spring turkey hunting is a big deal here in Michigan. We're ranked seventh in the nation for turkey harvest, harvesting over 30,000 turkeys."

Hunters can kill one male or bearded turkey in the spring season, which runs through May 11. A two-day youth season this past weekend gave young hunters a chance to bag a bird before the regular season opened.
In 2013, hunters harvested 11,374 birds in 89 of Indianaís 92 counties. Harrison County led the way with 512 birds.

If you missed the application period for a spring turkey license, itís ok. Opportunities for other licenses are still available.
New this year, spring turkey hunters may purchase a Hunt 234 license, a statewide hunting license valid for all open areas except public lands in Unit ZZ (southern Lower Peninsula and Beaver Island). Hunters can purchase a Hunt 234 license through May 31.
Turkey hunters may also purchase a leftover license for areas where licenses are still available. For a list of available licenses, go to www.michigan.gov/huntdrawings. Licenses will be sold until quotas are met.
