Michigan’s Fisheries Division announced this week it recommends the Upper Peninsula brook trout daily possession limit remain at its current level of five.

In 2000, the daily possession limit for brook trout in most Michigan streams was reduced from 10 fish to five fish. Since that time anglers have asked the DNR to consider reinstating the 10 fish daily possession limit for brook trout on Upper Peninsula streams.

The early Canada goose hunting season begins statewide Sept. 1 and runs through Sept. 15 most of the state. The daily bag limit is five.

Cougar Sighting Confirmed in Upper PeninsulaCougar Sighting Confirmed in Upper PeninsulaA recent trail camera photo of a cougar in northern Marquette County has been verified by the Department of Natural Resources’ cougar team.

The photo was taken at 2 a.m. on Wednesday, July 18 on private property. The landowner, who has asked to remain anonymous, met with DNR Wildlife Division staff this week to confirm the location where the photo was taken.

The Michigan DNR is concerned about a grass carp discover in the St. Joseph River in Berrien County.

A bow angler harvested a 33-pound grass carp July 7 near the Buchannan Dam. Tissue samples from the fish were submitted to a laboratory at Southern Illinois University to determine its reproductive status. Although grass carp findings are not unusual in this river, the lab results confirmed the fish was a reproductively-viable grass carp, which is cause for concern.

1920's Muskie Minnow1920's Muskie MinnowMichiana antique fishing tackle collectors will be displaying decades-old items made by home-grown tackle manufacturers at the Niles Riverfest Aug. 3-5, 2012.

In addition to showing their valuables made by the likes of the former Heddon, South Bend, Paw Paw, Creek Chub and Shakespeare tackle companies, the collectors are seeking any historical information people have from the pre-1970s era, including that about obscure smaller tackle manufacturers as well.
