This past fall, the Michigan DNR worked hard to stock fish in waters across Michigan — fish that will provide angling opportunities in seasons to come. The fall 2025 effort saw DNR crews stock seven different species at 76 locations throughout the state: 648,557 fish, weighing in at a total of 8.6 tons.
The application period for Michigan’s spring turkey hunting season is open now through Sunday, Feb. 1.

Fertile Grass Carp Found in St. Joseph River

The Michigan DNR is concerned about a grass carp discover in the St. Joseph River in Berrien County.
A bow angler harvested a 33-pound grass carp July 7 near the Buchannan Dam. Tissue samples from the fish were submitted to a laboratory at Southern Illinois University to determine its reproductive status. Although grass carp findings are not unusual in this river, the lab results confirmed the fish was a reproductively-viable grass carp, which is cause for concern.

Kevin VanDamAs much as I love power fishing techniques, you’ll see a drop-shot rig in my hands just about any time I’m fishing Michiana lakes during the summer.
In fact, it’s the best way to catch bass on natural lakes this time of year and one that I’ve done very well with on places like Klinger, Gull and even Grand Traverse Bay.
Bass will school and suspend just off the bottom over the deep grass flats of our lakes, so a drop-shot is ideal for catching them.
