Elite Pro Aaron MartensElite Pro Aaron MartensBIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Take the Bassmaster Classic champion, the Rookie of the Year, the Top 8 anglers from the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year rankings and four anglers voted in by the fans and put them on Muskegon Lake in Michigan for three days of competition to crown a single champion.

That’s Toyota All-Star Week, Sept. 27-29.

Now, take the thousands of fans who voted for their favorite anglers and draw 14 of them to be paired with the fishing finalists. As the pros advance, their fan counterparts advance. As they are eliminated, the corresponding fans are eliminated. In the end, there’s one fan champion.

That’s the Toyota All-Star Fan Favorite Angler Sweepstakes.


Brian Whitaker of Winona Lake, Ind. won The Bass Federation State Championship on Lake Wawasee last weekend.

Whitaker caught 10 bass that weighed 18.73 pounds in the two-day event, edging out Mark Lester of Albany, Ind. who had 10 weighing 17.68 pounds.

Whitaker will lead the 12-man state team into the TBF Northern Division Championship on the Ohio River in Wheeling, Va. Sept. 1-6.

The Indiana team will compete against teams from South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio. The top two finishers from each state will earn berths in next year’s National Championship.

Greg Mangus (Fremont, Ind.) and Kevin Fletcher (Elkhart) landed an 18.88-pound limit to capture the R&B Circuit title on the Randall Chain.

The event drew 44 teams, and despite 85-degree water, and produced 16 limits.

The winners used homemade black/blue 3/8-ounce jigs on hard bottoms surrounded by weeds. The win awarded them $766, but they also weighed the second heaviest bass of the tournament, a 4.88-pound largemouth that earned them an additional $88.

Tom Montague (Elkhart) and Aaron Likens (Wolcottville) landed an 11.83- pound limit by flipping a Reins Hog bait pegged to a Reins ½-ounce tungsten weight into thick weeds to finish second ($464).


Jason Dittmar and Dave Eggers teamed up to win the Wednesday night Southwest Michigan Anglers Club event on Diamond Lake recently. The winners had 9.88 pounds caught on crankbaits.

Second place went to Steve and Marco Lewis with 8.56 pounds caught on tubes. They also had big bass, a 4.21-pound largemouth. Rick Morrison and Bobby Thornton were third with 6.39 pounds caught on Senkos.

In the Sunday event on Klinger Lake, Scott Crocker and Chad Worvey fished jigs and tubes to catch 11.30 pounds, including a 4.05-pound fish that won big bass prize.

Mark and Hunter Zona were second with 10.60 pounds caught on jigs and drop-shot rigs while Brian and Renee Hensley were third with 9.69 pounds caught on crankbaits.


Jim Molnar, Jr. and Sr. (South Bend) won the Michiana Walleye Association Shelton’s Markets Challenge last weekend on the St. Joseph River at Buchanan with 8.28 pounds.

The winners ($319) caught their fish by trolling Storm Smash Shads and pulling Slow Death Livebait Rigs with crawlers along the edge of the river channel. The team keyed on an area that had small humps on the bottom that the fish were using as current break due to the high, fast water from all the rains. They also captured the ClearH2O tackle Big fish Award with a 2.71-pound walleye that earned them an additional $240.

Dwight Jones (Mishawaka) and Dallas Dunn (Indianapolis) were second ($159) with 6.91 pounds caught by pitching chartreuse jigs with leeches around current breaks and structure. Mike Rhoades (South Bend) and Randy Gaines (Chester, W.V.) were third ($96) with 6.46 pounds by pitching jigs to current breaks with crawlers in 9-10 foot of water.
