Western Michigan University Team
The Western Michigan University team of Mason Vernia, Kurt Antonowitsch, Jack Simpson and Drake Van Dike, won the Major League Fishing (MLF) Wiley X College Faceoff at the Detroit River in Trenton, Michigan, Saturday.
The Broncos bass club boated 44 bass weighing 109 pounds, 8 ounces to win the fourth and final Wiley X College Faceoff Events of the 2021 season and earn the win by a 14-pound, 11-ounce margin over Adrian College.
According to post-tournament reports, the Western Michigan teams started on high percentage areas early, targeting deep rocks & grass with a drop-shot rig. Vernia and Antonowitsch threw a Strike King Baby Z-Too with a 3/8-ounce tungsten drop-shot weight, while Simpson and Van Dike opted to drop-shot a pearl-colored Berkley Powerbait MaxScent Flat Worm, also with a 3/8-ounce weight. Both teams credited their electronics as being crucial in chasing the big schools of smallmouth all day.
Arjay’s Report
Ben Harrison - 1st Place
Ben Harrison fished alone and won the Arjay’s weeknighter on a very tough Diamond Lake last night.
There were no limits weighed in among the 20 teams.
Harrison, one of only four teams that caught four fish, won with 7.10 pounds. He caught his fish in 15-20 feet by drop shotting.

Pat Pilmore and Brent Burgess - 1st Place
Pat Pilmore and Brent Burgess won the Southwest Michigan Anglers Club event on Corey Lake last weekend with a limit weighing 9.89 pounds.
The winners also took home the big bass pot with a 3.71-pound largemouth. They caught their fish on topwaters and wacky rigs.
Don and Joe Dimarzio were second with 9.50 caught on drop-shot rigs while Chuck Powell ad Louie Stout were third with a 9.27 limit caught on jigs and drop shots.
Danny Linn and Rick Kedik were fourth with 9.21 pounds caught on frogs and chatterbaits.

Terry Smith and Scott Crocker - 1st Place
Terry Smith and Scott Crocker won the Southwest Michigan Anglers Club weeknight event on Diamond last week.
The winners had a limit weighing 8.95 pounds and said they used crankbaits.
Chad and Connor Worvey were second with a 8.41-pound limit caught on jigs and drop- shot rigs.
Mickey Thomas and Dave Clark were third with a 7.84 limit caught on crankbaits while Trevor Paulus and Matt Gordon had a limit weighing 7.82 pounds.
Eban Lambert and Joe Sears - Big Bass
Eban Lambert and Joe Sears won the big bass award with a 3.94-pound largemouth caught on a jerkbait.
Arjay’s Report
Scott Carpenter and Brandon Flowers - 1st Place
Scott Carpenter and Brandon Flowers won the Arjay’s weeknight tournament on Lake Templene last week and took home big bass honors.
The team had a limit weighing in at 10.08 pounds caught in 12 feet of water on crankbaits. They also earned the Tackle Shack Big Bass honors with a 4.12 largemouth.
There were 11 limits weighed in by the 21 teams despite the fact the weeds were sprayed that day.
Gary Butcher and Scott Smith - 2nd Place
Gary Butcher and Scott Smith were second 9.72 pounds caught on Butcher's Baits stick worms in 3-6 feet of water.
